Popular Yoga Styles

Astanga Vinyasa – One of the most energetic, dynamic forms of Yoga where postures are connected in a set series of flowing, dance like movements. Sometimes also known as Power Yoga.

Bikram – Taught in a hot room using the 26 classical hatha postures. Can be hard work.

Hatha – A general term that refers to the physical aspect of Yoga. 'Ha' is Sanskrit for sun and 'Tha' for moon, representing the two different energies in our bodies, aiming for balance between the two.

Iyengar – This is a widely practised form in the West, excellent for building strength. The emphasis is on alignment and making fine adjustments to deepen the posture.

Kundalini - Calls itself 'the yoga of awareness'. The emphasis is on energy, seeking to awaken the dormant energy in the body through drawing it up through the seven chakras (energy centres of the body). Postures are done in a specific sets that work on particular body systems, such as heart or lymph flow. To clear mental debris meditation and mantra chanting are included in this more spiritual form of Yoga.

Scaravelli influenced - The late Vanda Scaravelli was a student of Iyengar and others. She taught in Italy for almost 40 years influencing many teachers around the world with her style, but she did not want a form named after her. This approach is tailored to the individual and puts an emphasises on a very gentle journey into the postures. The three main elements are breathing, grounding and the 'wave of the spine'. Very helpful for those with spinal problems.

Sivananda - Classes follow a set format: 15 minutes pranayama (breathing techniques) warm up with sun salutations and then a set of 12 basic postures. Beginners do a course of eight classes, building up to a headstand after six. The emphasis is to introduce the ancient science of Yoga. Information on diet and nutrition is included and vegetarianism encouraged.

Viniyoga – Here postures are modified to suit the individual. The emphasis is on slow conscious breathing. Being gentle and slow, this could be a good form for those with injuries.

Teachers - Do remember that there are as many different 'styles of each style' as there are different teachers. In many ways the approach of the teacher is sometimes more important than the 'label' of the style. If you have done one class in a particular style and you didn't like it you may find that if you do the same style with a different teacher that indeed you may like it. It's best to trust your own intuition and try out different teachers or styles before deciding on your 'path'.
